Its been announced that plans to Re-introduce ‘Broad Gauge’ to Paddington Station in London are at an advance stage.
Irish engineering and industry consortium Polof Rail, including Irish Railways, have submitted plans to run through services from the Republic of Ireland via a new ferry link from Rosslare to Fishguard in Wales. Polof Rail spokesperson Seamus O’paolirf said that the plan is to bring Irish ‘Broad Gauge’ of 5ft3in, a lot narrower than Brunels 7ft Broad Gauge, along duel gauge track from Fishguard to Paddington. Irish Gauge is considerably less than Brunels and therefore will run well within UK infrastructure clearances.
A ferry, the ex-Dover–Dunkirk train Ferry ‘Pas de Calais' has been purchased for the service and will be modified to handle Irish Gauge stock.
Seamus O’paolirf say’s, with the onslaught of aviation overcrowding European sky’s, makes rail travel is the way to go, We can forsee Belfast – Dublin – Cardif - London services by being as popular as London – Paris/Brussels Eurostar services through the Channel Tunnel.
Costs are Negligible compared with that of the Eurostar project, no vast expenditure of the cost of the tunnel or a new rail link. New duel gauge track will be laid during existing infrastructure works with a planned completion by 2012. This coinciding with the London Olympics will able the Irish Olympic team to arrive in style, By Train.
The icing on the cake is the Purchase of Spare Eurostar trains. The plan is for 3 of these to be ‘Dieselised’ with High power GM Diesel power units to be installed into these trains and regauged wheel sets for 5ft3in gauge track. This will introduce a class of travel never before witnessed on the island of Ireland.
The whole plan is now waiting for the seal of approval and funding from the European commission for Energy & Transport.
This project will pave the way for any future tunnel project linking Ireland and the UK.
