Brussels Metro to install new fiber-optic communications network

Alcatel-Lucent is to deliver the fiber-optic network which will form the communications backbone of Brussels’ new automated metro system.

Transport authority STIB is in the process of fully-automating the Belgian capital’s subway network, which will increase the system’s capacity from 24 trains an hour to 40, to meet an increasing demand for rail travel.

STIB predicts that by 2017, Brussels’ urban rail network could see passenger numbers increase by 20 per cent to 415 million people each year.

The new fiber-optic network will support the CBTC signalling system, CCTV, passenger communication systems across the metro’s 70 stations, ticketing systems and general office communications.

The contract includes design, installation and a five-year maintenance agreement.
