I'm half-way through reading H.A.V. Bulleid's book "Bulleid of the Southern", and there's a photograph of a BFB driving wheelset for British India Line which was welded up from identical quarter-sections, with crankpin and tyre welded on and axle hole drilled-out, rather than being cast. Also the balance weights were welded on.

Does anyone know if any of the welded wheelsets survived into preservation? I'd very much doubt if they have, but it's a point of interest to me! Looking at the photograph they look far from neat, and I would have though thet they'd be intrinsically weaker than a similar cast wheelset, especially as far as the crankpin was concerned.

    Richard.
