São Paulo has welcomed the first of 26 new metro trains which will more than quadruple the current Line 5 fleet.

A consortium led by Spanish manufacturer CAF has delivered the first vehicle from a factory in the state municipality of Hortolandia.

A total of 26 new trains will be built for the line in an order worth R $615 million.

As well as Line 5′s new trains, an additional 31 monorail trains are set to begin operation on the city’s new Silver Line by 2014.

Line 5 is currently being extended by 11.5 kilometres from Largo Treze to Chácara Klabin. Once complete, the R $7.5 billion extension, which will utilise a CBTC (Communication Based Train Control Communications) system, will more than double the current 8.5 kilometre route.

Dynamic testing will now begin on the first of the new trains, while static testing will get underway on the second vehicle later this month.
