Two people were injured when a car left a bridge and rolled 30ft (9.1m) down an embankment on to a railway line.

Train services were severely disrupted after the vehicle blocked the tracks during the incident in Devon. The accident happened on Friday at the A381 and A303 intersection between Newton Abbot and Totnes. Two passengers in the car were taken to Torbay Hospital by ambulance. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police and Network Rail engineers were trying to recover the car.

The line was partially blocked, with most services terminating at Newton Abbot or Totnes.

Police were informed of the incident at about 1945 BST on Friday. One line was reopened by 2140 BST for some cross-country services, but with trains being slowed down to 20mph (32km/h).

Network Rail said it was attempting to work out the best way to recover the vehicle. It was considering using either a road crane to drag the vehicle back up the embankment, or one on the rail line to pull the car out of the way.

Network Rail said its staff would be working through the night and it hoped services would be back to normal by Saturday morning.
