A railway station in Aberdeenshire that was closed during the Beeching cuts in the 1960s is to re-open within 18 months, deputy first minister Nicol Stephen announced today (18 December).

Stephen confirmed that £3.24m of funding has been agreed to re-open the derelict Laurencekirk station, which was closed in 1967 - almost 40 years ago. Funding will be provided by Transport Scotland, the Scottish Executive and NESTRANS.
