I think the jury is also out as to whether it goes on its own on Saturday. Looking at the water stops, if West Coast was twitchy about Scots Guardsman getting from Rugby to Euston to Southall on a tender of water (4000 gallons) with the SD Lakes trip from Carnforth then I can't see them feeling comfortable about the B1 doing it either, even though I think the B1 carries a few hundred gallons more.

UK Steam has the times with the DL crossed out. Not sure how David knows as its still not on RTT. I am booked on the VT trip with 4965 (times also not yet on RTT) but could do both, 61306 am and 4965 pm

Times are on RTT although if the diesel is not going with the train to Chester it certainly doesn't return to Southall. If it is parked up at Euston then that local move isn't shown so we don't know. What we do know is that a diesel isn't needed for a shunt move at Chester as Clan Line handled it on her own on her trip in June.

Yes Al times appeared in the last hour. Doesn't look so good now. Still nothing on RTT for 4965 though

Can't see WCR letting a cold Mayflower pull a potential 10 coach load up Campden Bank without assistance ! I'd love to be proven wrong.

Forget the Camden Bank issue for a moment. This business does raise an underlying problem with water in and out of Euston.

After losing Northampton as a water stop, Rugby now becomes the first and last place on the WCML. The moment you use a locomotive with a 4000 gallon rather than a 5000+ gallon tender you automatically will pick up a diesel. First 46115, now 61306. Add to that the climb out of Euston and suddenly it seems to me that Euston is now a Class 8 only starting point for steam, plus Britannias.

Just to make clear, I do not know for sure that there will be a diesel, but this is the best advice I have received to date. Sorry about this element of uncertainty.

Is there really nowhere to go inside for a top up south of Rugby ?, I remember doing it on 6201 at Bletchley yard not so many years ago.

Yes 6201 watered there on the first preserved steam out of New Street a few years ago. Not sure why they don't/can't stop there now.

My guess is that the pathing for a 15 min stop there may not work or simply that the water tanker and hose route is not now available. (I think that may be the problem at Northampton now.)

Might be a problem the movement needs to look at together to solve then, as short of using a water carrier or 46233/60163 etc, that seriously limits what can be used solo, there's enough loops and sidings, so trying to find a way to make one of these work in future should be given consideration.

Is the problem compounded bythe new rules limiting train lengths esp if a water carrier is used. A class 7 would need a water carier but the weight would limit the formation so making fare increase issues. To solve the problem if you take a water carrier you have to resort to a class 8 anyway to get the train length, or as here use a box

The rule on train lengths is just a recommendation at present until the working party has reported

More interesting may be any future rules regarding steam using primary routes as distinct from secondary routes. You can see it coming down the line for the obvious reasons.
