Mr Riley's team certainly put some effort into getting the maintenance turn round pretty quick.

There's no one quite like Riley's for quick turnaround of a loco. Ian is to be applauded for his efficient planning and approach to keeping his locos running.

I'm booked on this tomorrow, so definitely hoping 45407 is ready as with ten on I'd be a little concerned at one Black 5 doing the journey in its own!

Ian and his team have done what they are well known for. If other locomotives could be looked after as well and as swiftly we probably would not be having so much activity on the Steam Traction thread concerning locomotive availability 2014. There is no substitute for really knowing the machine you are responsible for in conjunction with great preparation and organisation when the time comes for work to be done.

Without wishing to put a chink in the Riley armour, we're waiting at Crewe with the train reported as delayed at Warrington due to a locomotive fault and well over an hour late.

5407 has been failed, at the moment at Warrington with the 47s alongside but the signaller at Warrington does not have the procedure to change locos. So we are going to limp to Crewe where diesel assistance will be attached.....
Update 5407 is coming off here at Warrington to run light back to Bury, we will continue with the 44871 solo to Crewe where diesel will be attached, hopefully at the back....

We were allowed out of Crewe ahead of the service train hence the assistance to get us out of it's way. Now south of Church Stretton and since we are so late yes the diesel is still assisting some of the time, a 5 with 12 on would never manage this route on it's own so what is the alternative?

Sitting at signal north of Craven Arms, northbound unit just passed so should be away shortly.

Was chuffing up the front on the climb out of Shrewsbury
...although the 47 on the back was making just as much noise shoving from behind!

To be fair, they were horrendously late and busy trying to claw back time, it'd be pretty daft not to use the diesel.
If there were still two steamers on the front, they sure as heck wouldn't have only one working whilst the other just sat coasting along for the ride.
