Ceremony marks South West Wales upgrade

A £48 million scheme to improve rail services in South West Wales, which includes the construction of the new Loughor viaduct, has been officially launched.

Politicians and rail bosses gathered at Gowerton station, one of the interchanges to benefit from the programme, today (July 8) to mark the end of the works.

Major infrastructure improvements will allow an extra 95 services to call at Gowerton station each week.

The Minister for Transport, Edwina Hart said: “The Welsh Government’s priority is to ensure that we have a transport system that helps improve the economic competitiveness of Wales and that provides good access to jobs and services and reducing poverty for the people of Wales.”

Mark Langman, route managing director for Network Rail Wales, said: “The announcement today marks a new beginning for the railway in South West Wales. And this is made possible owing to a shared vision and a strong partnership, which we want to emulate in other parts of Wales.”
