More than £1bn of extra contributions to Crossrail have been wrung from City institutions after Gordon Brown ratcheted up the pressure to get a funding deal agreed.

Senior government officials turned up the heat in negotiations to persuade the City of London Corporation, BAA, Canary Wharf and large companies to promise hundreds of millions of pounds extra for the capital’s proposed east-west rail link project.
