I see the original thread has closed but would like to record that whilst I was away on holiday I received a letter from Statesman Rail which gave a bit more info re the debacle on 23 May and
    - £20 refund
    - £10 voucher off a future tour
    Thank you Statesman Rail!

It's quite a long letter. The key elements are

"The last minute decision to remove....35028.. was inflicted upon us with no ultimatum by an influencing third party...this decision was in no way brought about by the actions of Statesman Rail, DB Schenker, MNLPS or Network Rail".

However, the letter does not specify who was responsible.

Easy to work out by the omitted party in the list!

    From Steam Railway issue 442:

QUOTE="WCR managing director Pat Marshall told Steam Railway that "West Coast took on this charter and at no stage was it agreed to operate with Clan Line. It was planned for operation with a diesel.""

And that only goes to show that you shouldn't always believe what is published in Steam Railway....

Planned for operation with diesel? Statesmen had it advertised on their website for "steam haulage". Tangmere had been doing the honors on these Golden Arrow Statesmens tours prior to WCRC suspension. Statesmen scrambled to get Clan Line and DBS crews so that the tour could go ahead but alas so could someone take over from this point?

You think WCRC are misquoted in SR?

Not misquoted, I am sure, but that is not to say that what SR was told to report was necessarily what actually happened. If you were a recently appointed? senior employee of WCRC - correct me if that is wrong please - then might not your first priority be to present your company in the best possible light? That seems the most likely scenario here.

However, the world has moved on and it's good that Statesman Rail has helped out its customers a bit.

As you say its history but if it was Ms Marshall that provided the quote, she has been a WCRC Director for a considerable time. Quite possibly it was a statement conveyed from the new Board but it's not a great way to commence a new era, is it? It would have better to remain silent than remove all doubt that a farce had occurred.
