I was wondering if anyone here might be able to shed light on the origins of a cast iron carriage dimension plate ? The plate reads '41 Tons 66' - 6" by 9'-7" '. The only vehicle I can find matching the plate are class 502 EMU's (built LMS Derby 1940) with the correct weight and length but officially only 9' - 5" wide (accordng to wikipedia). How accurate were the official figures? The trailer vehicles were 24 tons and I have seen a matching 24 ton plate...

The rear of the plate is as-removed and still retains a distinctive red paint, although it's hard to tell if this is LM maroon or a faded primer.

    Curious and hopeful,

    Rob
