Class 84 returning to York

Hmmm. Trying to work this one out - they famously aren’t a fan of duplication so will the 84 be residing in the Great Hall to represent the AC Electric fleet whilst the Station Hall occupants are hidden away due to roof works?

 

It was preserved to be an example of both North British Loco-built modern traction and represent the first generation AC electric locomotives.

 

No, it wasn't. It was taken by the NRM on long term loan in 1979 on the understanding that it would be swapped for a Class 86 when they were withdrawn. The museum were adamant about this for many years, it wasn't until the mid 90's that it was formally claimed in its own right, because by then NBL non steam mainline locos were extinct.
Ironically, its formal preservation at that stage meant that Pete Waterman didn't bid for the departmental, 84009, that was still in existence, and it was subsequently scrapped.

 

That may have been the NRM's stated view but the aspiration of the late Brian Webb, whose actions helped changed the NRM's policy on "modern traction", was that 84001 was preserved as I have stated. Given that the change of policy was not acceptable to many at the time it may well be that the statement reflects that internal dissension.
