I am trying to prepare an article and need some information on how much coal a loco would use on a mainline run today. Obviously there are numerous factors such as length of run, weight of train, size and number of climbs, size of locomotive and tender capacity. But in simple terms do operators plan a trip based on what the tenders coal capacity is, or do they usually refill the tender during a trip. If they do refill the tender would this just be 1-2 tons or most of a tender load. Detailed answers welcome if you have the time. I have done a search on here and couldn't find a thread but if you know of one could you provide a link.

From tours I've seen and been on, they tend to coal up to full capacity. There are often light engine movements at each end, plus potential for delays, diversions and most tours are a "decent" mileage that will require most of a tender load so it makes sense to fill it up.

Coal quality varies, as do firing techniques so it is difficult to say exactly how much you are going to use. Crosswinds and headwinds also make a difference on the day, so always carry a reserve.

Half a tender on a big engine is usually enough for a day on a preserved line, with a few exceptions for mileage.
