The colour photography of Colin Gifford - "In the wink of an eye"

Saturday December 12th Film Show 7.30pm at Kidderminster Railway Museum at Station Approach, Comberton Hill, Kidderminster, Worcs. DY10 1QX

Colin Gifford is considered by many to have been the pioneer of a new genre of railway photographers. Instead of the more traditional three-quarter front view of engines and the trains they hauled, Colin was acutely aware of the relationship of the train with the natural and man-made landscape, and the people who worked with them. His first book Decline of Steam, published in 1965, was, and still is, regarded as one of the most influential books of railway photography, in which he used his fine art training to good effect to perfect creative compositions and capture breath-taking atmosphere. Further books followed - Each a Glimpse...(1970), ...and gone for ever (1994) which also depicted the nation's steam railways, or what was left of them, through the eyes of an artist. His photographs were recognised in 1994 by the Royal Mail which published a set of five postage stamps featuring five of his images.
Think of Colin Gifford and one normally thinks of the stunning black and white images that appear in his books. What has not been seen in public before is his colour work, and now, after some forty years, Colin has agreed to show some of his colour images that convey much the same sort of artistry as his black and white photographs.
This is a very rare opportunity to see the photographic work of a national household name. Don't miss it! By the way, it will be mince pies at the half time interval!

    Well Martin -

I have to thank you for the heads up on this one!

Four hours of 50 / 70 / 50 on the M6 was well worth it - especially as it was a two way exchange of information with CG, as well as amongst the audience - beat Irwell Vale on the night anyway!

and, in the absence of one of the other steeds, I managed to propel the Escort with sufficent determination to make last orders at the Ae Yeung to make up for no tea!

Time to revive this thread :

'In the wink of an eye' is Colin Gifford's latest book to be published. As with 'Transition' a few years ago it comes from KRM publishing at Kidderminster Railway Museum, price £45.

My copy arrived this morning and after a quick look it doesn't disappoint.
First thoughts are that Gifford's familiar style in colour and with the rendition of colour film emulsions of the time produces something evocatively different to his work in black and white.
A view of how drab and lacking in clear and bright colour locations, some still familiar to us in 2025 actually were. A book well worth having I think.

I haven’t got it yet but obviously another must have. Colin Gifford’s work had a profound effect on photographers of my generation, I understand he’s not in the best of health at present so we must wish him
    well.

Could one of the mods suitably update the thread title please to refer to the new book.

    Thanks
