A new tram network in Constantine, Algeria, has opened to passengers.

The first service was launched on July 4 by Algeria’s Minister of Transport, Amar Tou.

The Setram joint venture – which is made up of RATP Dev, Enterprise Metro d’Alger (EMA) and the Establishment Public Transport Urban and Suburban Algiers (ETUSA) – will operate the 8.1 km system for the next 10 years.

Constantine, Algeria’s third largest city, join Algiers and Oran as the latest of the country’s metropolitan areas to open a Setram-operated tramway.

Alstom has supplied the new trams, which are based on the company’s Citadis model.

Citadis trams are already in operation across north Africa, including in Tunisia and Morocco.
