SNCF has agreed an order with VeriFone Systems for 12,000 PDAs which will manage onboard ticket payments across the French rail network.

The PAYware Wynid system will oversee the 1,65 million transactions made on French trains every year.

As well as accepting all card payments, the new technology will allow contactless payment through mobile phones.

“SNCF is at the forefront of transformation of the passenger experience and has undertaken the largest project in Europe to provide an all-in-one mobile payment and information service that accommodates payment systems from multiple vendors,” said Olivier Guiot, country manager, VeriFone France.

“We look forward to completing the full-scale implementation as SNCF brings these new services to its passengers.”

The first 1,000 devices will be rolled out in April next year, with the remaining 11,000 to be delivered over a three-month period.
