Contracts awarded for Riyadh Metro

The transport authority leading the development of Riyadh’s new metro system has awarded three significant contracts worth a total of $22.5 billion.

Announcing the milestone, Ibrahim Bin Muhammad Al Sultan, president of Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), said: “This is the biggest infrastructure project to be undertaken in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is a cornerstone of the bold future we envision for our city.”

Three international consortia will together design and build 85 new stations and six fully-automated metro lines stretching for 180 kilometres across Saudi Arabia’s capital city.

The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) has awarded the largest contract, which is worth $7.8 billion, for three of the new lines to a consortium led by Spanish construction giant FCC.

A $5.2 billion contract for Riyadh’s ‘Red Line’ has been won by the Arriyadh New Mobility group (ANM) – led by Ansaldo STS.

Finally, the BACS consortium, headed by Bechtel, will design and build the remaining two lines at the cost of $9.5 billion.

With construction contracts now awarded, work will begin immediately to design the new system.

The ADA has already announced that Gerber Architekten, Omrania & Associates, Sn.hetta and Zaha Hadid had produced the winning station designs for the system.
