Costain has been awarded a £150 million contract to prepare a section of railway between East London and Essex for the start of Crossrail services in 2018.

Design work will begin immediately for the project, which will involve track renewals, the installation of overhead line equipment, extra train stabling capacity and turnback facilities.

The project will also include the delivery of station improvements at Romford, Ilford, Forest Gate, Goodmayes, Harold Wood, Gidea Park, Chadwell Heath and Brentwood.

The main works will take place between late 2014 and 2017.

Andrew Wyllie, chief executive of Costain, said: “We are delighted that Network Rail has awarded us this contract on Crossrail, currently Europe’s largest infrastructure programme and a vital component of the UK’s transport network.

“This award further demonstrates our ability to deliver multidisciplinary and integrated services in long-term, strategic collaboration with our customers.”
