Council scrutinises rail services

    Fare increases, overcrowding and reduced services on First Great Western (FGW) trains in Wiltshire have been discussed by the county council.

    The move by the overview and scrutiny committee followed concerns expressed by local commuters.

    Members heard FGW have responded to some of the opinions with minor changes and improvements.

    A FGW spokeswoman said it had an open and regular dialogue with the council and was happy to discuss any issues.

    The scrutiny committee heard changes to some services as a result of FGW's timetable changes could make improvements to the area around Melksham rail station unviable.

    This would mean access improvements from the A350, integration with bus services and parking provision could be shelved.

    Wiltshire council said although it had no direct power over the rail industry, it would continue to push for a solution that mitigated the impact where possible, including working with others to make the case for Wiltshire commuters..
