Does anyone know of any railway projects that have been funded via crowdfunding?

Out of interest, what is the difference between crowdfunding and holding an appeal?

    In some cases, not much.

In other cases: some crowdfunding companies will only release the donated money to the campaign if it reaches or exceeds its funding target. If not, the donations are refunded.
