Very nice to see APB have restored passenger shipping to berths 46/47 in the Ocean Dock at Southampton. This dock was the traditional home for all the great Transatlantic liners from the turn of the century (19/20th) until the 1980's - when it was used only for cargo/vehicle import/export trade. Queen Mary 2 made her first visit to the new 'Ocean Terminal' on Saturday 6th June 2009, re-establishing the connection between Cunard and the Ocean Dock.

The original art deco Ocean Terminal was at berths 43/44 on the opposite side of the dock and was sadly demolished. That quayside is also notoriously famous as the departure point for 'Titanic' on her fateful maiden voyage of April 1912.

I saw a P&O vessel in there a few weeks ago - great to see them close to the public - they look pretty impressive from Town Pier. I hear rumours that Shieldhall and Calshot may move nearer Town Pier also.

    Cheers
    Chris

Oh I don't know, there's something special about watching a big ship coming up from Cowes in the summer morning light.

I remember being a young cop working in the Docks in the summer of '73, watching the SS France (running late) arriving through the mist at 5am - a wonderful sight.

Unfortunately the new Ocean Terminal building isn't a patch on the QE2 terminal.
We had an hour & a half wait before we could book in for Queen Victoria on 27th May followed by another long queue to go through the security checks. The building has all the ambience & atmosphere of a cross between a modern warehouse building & T5 at Heathrow.
Also, unlike QE2 terminal, the car drop off point is out in the open with just a high roof that did nothing to protect passengers from being rain & wind swept!
On return there was a long queue from baggage claim through a tiny door to exit & escape from the building.
