Had a very nice weekend riding behind and linesiding the big blue beast 498-022 16/17 October. Here she is about to cross the river Vltava between Praha Vrsovice and Praha Smichov.

She is heading 'The Křivoklát Express' which runs three or four times a year (on Saturdays and Sundays) from Prague to Křivoklát (for the awesome Castle there) then on to Luzna for the Czech Railway Museum (always worth a visit). Most of the families seem to get off (and rejoin) at Křivoklát . At £10 return on a turn up and pay basis its great value!

Looks like a serious bit of kit John. Definitely one for the future - do they have a website?

A large number of steam locomotives are still owned and operated by Czech Railways (Cesky Drahy 'CD'). 498-022 is one such machine I believe. 'The Křivoklát Express' is listed in the CD public timetable which is published in December each year and the excellent Czech Railway Enthusiast site 'Zel Pages' have a comprehansive events calendar

    http://www.zelpage.cz/kalendar/

from which a lot of detail can be gleaned in advance

    http://www.zelpage.cz/jizda/20101211-krivoklatsky-expres---advent-na-krivoklate.html

I'm a big fan of Czech Railways in general and rely on Zel Pages for the info to plan all my trips over there. Never known them to be wrong.

Zel works really well with the Google toolbar translator btw.
