I popped into Castlecroft at the ELR yesterday and had a chat with some really nice volunteer guys. One was the chap who is responsible for the magnificent paint job on 50 008. The finish on that loco is superb, as smooth as silk and he and his team should be congratulated.
I told them about this shot I took at the Horwich Works Open Day in 1980. D1041 Western Prince had obviously had a rush paint job for the event. The finish was rather interesting.

The BHG didn't own Western Prince in 1980, it was owned by an individual, so you can't really point the finger at Bury for this quick lick of paint

It was a rush job, nothing to do with Bury...it was painted by the painters at Horwich works during a night shift, they didn't have time to do the prep work needed.
A quick rub down and 1 coat of paint.

That was the year I started my apprenticeship at Horwich, and am now a volunteer UP at Bury.
Just helped to paint D1501 & 50008, part way through the 03 shunter.

Ironically, it looks like the paint itself has actually been applied quite smoothly, but on top of some interesting preparation (or lack of)!

no thats me..!! Barry was one of the other guys in Team 1501 that repainted it in to two tone green

thanks for your comments much appreciated , we all love what we do & are very proud of the repaints we have done in recent times.

I have just spent this week having to paint the bogies again..!! as they have just been swapped with 47575's bogies as they came with white wall tyres which was most inappropriate ..!

picture of D1501 a couple of days ago after its bogie repaint :

with regard to D1041 it is soon to have a propper lick of paint , no rush job like the Horwich days..

Barry will be assisting on this but has got quite a bit better since his days of being an apprentice at Horwich ..

his work recently on repaints on 55022 nose ends etc,50008,D2062 & the Castlecroft crane into British rail yellow with fantastic wasp stripes.. are indeed a credit to him.
