Danube road-rail bridge opens between Bulgaria and Romania

A new road-rail bridge connecting Bulgaria and Romania has opened to traffic, six years after construction began.

The bridge will significantly improve the transportation of freight across the Danube River which previously relied on an infrequent ferry service.

The 1.9km Vidin-Calafat bridge has been built by Spanish contractor FCC and officially opened on June 14.

Ground was first broken on site in 2007 but a number of delays had pushed back the original 2010 completion date.

Around 275 million euro has been spent building the new bridge and modernising the surrounding rail infrastructure.

Fernando Moreno, chairman of FCC Construction, said: “The Vidin-Calafat bridge is a shining example of European construction, improving the living standards of citizens in both countries and contributing to the development of an economically devitalized area.

“FCC has put technologically innovative solutions into practice to overcome natural challenges such as the Danube’s massive flow through the two cities.”
