I think the ESR are hoping that Goliath will be out of works towards the end of this year. She'll then be ran in there before heading home to Paignton.

Plan is for Goliath to be at Paington for the start of the 2020 season as far as I am aware.

Did the railway in the 90’s have an autocoach? I have a feeling from my holidays when I was a child that the summer trains ran with one?

One set had the observation saloon and the other set the autocoach. Of course I could be completely wrong!

Yes they did. It was used on Thomas trains (at Kingswear) when the line "did Thomas". I am sure it was also used as a tail end car for one of the raked when it was two train running. It was used for Directors at meetings.
It was sold to the South Devon (I believe) some years ago.

    They had two - 232 and 238.

    232 - http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=52 / http://www.bodminrailway.co.uk/stock/moreinfo/44
    238 - http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=55

232 was named Claire and 238 Charlotte, both had gangway connections.

232 was used as an observation carriage in it's later years at Paignton 'Driving end gutted, steps removed. Fitted with loose chairs, public address, battery charger, lpg generator. Brown and cream livery. Connection at one end: "Directors Inspection Saloon". ', and 238 was used as a normal coach which was added to the second set on two train days. 2006 was the last season 238 was used and in 2007 was stored at Kingswear .

2008 both were sold, 232 to Bodmin and 238 to Push Pull Limited (who own 1450 & autocoach 178) and was taken to the Dean Forest Railway.

Both have been restored to full working order, with gangway connection removed and autofittings made use of again. 238 hasn't had any interior work done to it though as far as I know and re-entered traffic in 2011 and ran for 3 years at the DFR before moving with 1450 & 178 to the Severn Valley in 2014.

I've not seen 232 since it's left Paignton, and am not sure when it was last used on the (P&)DSR and as an observation saloon not sure if that was for public use or staff/hire use only, I never saw it in operation. It is currently at the South Devon Railway and has recently been painted chocolate and cream. I'm assuming Bodmin still own it and it's being loaned there for the 50th anniversary celebrations as the two autos the SDR had running for years are out of traffic (225 and 228) as well as the unrestored 240. 163 from Llangollen is currently on loan to the SDR as well and they use 5542's 233 coach which has been in service about 3 years now I would think. 178 is visiting in April with 1450 to make up the four auto coach formations seen on the line's first preserved services in 1969.

Good to read a far more accurate and detailed observation JBTE.

Following on from James' post, does anyone know if there is a plan for 4110? Goliath is due back next year and guess 4555 wont be back much before then. Hercules is still in the que for overhaul so it potentially leaves 4110 for quite a while longer out of service.

Anyone able to advise what loco's likely to be running tomorrow, and also which way it's pointing? Thanks in advance.

on the subject of coaches, what happened to the clerestory roofed coach the DSR had some time back I can remember it,because it stood out when everything else was Mk 1, or DMU trailer cars I think it was in use as a refreshments vehicle .

I wonder if another contract job? Would assume perhaps once 5239 is back another one will be started.

As the season runs for a good 9 month it would appear they like to have 4 operational locomotives (this year 7827,75014,2253 & 7820)

    Next year 2020 you can add 5239 + 4555

Photos on Facebook of 7827 arriving at Ian Riley's works today. With the S160 yet to steam at the NYMR will Dartmouth be getting a stand in loco from elsewhere for the next few weeks/month(s)?

Two Manors always look good together on the line: they did last time 7820 visited. ;)

That was not just a "Clerestory roofed coach" it is the Churchward dynamometer car. The instrumentation was removed and transferred to the Hawkesworth car at the time. It is numbered 7 and still listed on the SDR website.

    Best regards
