5239 has been withdrawn from service after her failure last wednesday. Her full 10 year overhaul is now planned to commence next summer, once 75014 is back up and running. 7820 & 7827 are the duty engines this week untill thursday, when 7827 will head to churston for some well earnt maintenance. 4277 will take over on the friday - monday. 7820 will also be running the 3 days of 2 train running next week and will then stay on with us as a spare whilst annual work is undertaken on 7827. It is planned to use 7820 over the last weekend of her stay with us. It's been a cracking engine & a real credit to the owning group.

The boiler for 75014 is returning the middle of next week. There is still an awful lot of work to do before shes ready to run, but were hopeful we can have her running by the time the summer timetable commences next july.

4555's overhaul is progressing, albeit slowly after a very busy summer for us. The frames are off the wheels and slowly being rubbed down, inspected and repainted. The wheel sets are at SDR engineering for re-tyring whilst the huge pile of bits at churston workshop is being repaired and stored. What remains of the boiler is currently at Tyseley, a complete new barrell, throat plate & back head were required, so its safe to say she was pretty worn out!

Another engine will be hired in for next year, but as yet no concrete plans, so watch this space!

D7535 came out to have a little run on the line today hauling the 1415 Paignton - Kingswear service due to 7820 having a warm bearing issue. 4277 entered service for the 1615 service after having some springs replaced earlier today and will be in service during the weekend and during the first part of next week.

Just a minor correction, 7820 had a trailing coupling rod bearing run warm rather than an axlebox, the reason for such having now been identified and repair actioned.

    Morning All,

I visited the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway in July - the first time that I have been there since I don't know when. A few snaps are on Flickr and, if anyone would like to see them, this is the first one in the Photostream :

[IMG]RD11502. GWR Manor Class 4-6-0 7827 LYDHAM MANOR at Paignton Queen's Park Station on the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway in South Devon. by Ron Fisher, on Flickr

Alternatively, they can also be found in this album :

    Hope that they're of interest.

There's a lot of attention being paid to winter services and winter maintenance work but there are a few things to update you on:

7820 Dinmore Manor will leave the line on Thursday 8th October with its last day in service being tomorrow Sunday 4th. It has been on the line since June and has been a great engine to have. 4277 will take over operational duties until 7827 Lydham Manor has returned from the workshops after some maintenance.

We have launched a new look website this week which is hopefully easier to navigate than the last one. It has a few new features and is compatible on a variety of different devices, take a look: www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk

We had a couple of rare visitors to the line on Wednedsay 30th. 2x Class 153s (153325 & 153333) were hired from First Great Western (now Great Western Railway) on a private charter from Torquay to Kingswear crossing over at Paignton. This was in connection with the Cominity Rail awards being held in Torquay. They later did a charter from Torquay to Okehampton on Friday.

Our next charter is booked to be the RTC Dartmouth Express on the 24th expected to be hauled behind the Brit.

Dinmore Manor has been a great attribute on the DSRailway, hard working, looking good with our own Manor and of course appreciated by a great many of the travellers on the line.

Se looks a little forlorn, in the rain, this morning as she awaits her ride, by road, to her next port of call.
The weather has been great in recent weeks - in fact most of the time 7820 has been our guest - so it might appear that the weather has changed as a result of her imminent departure.;)

As reported, in an earlier post, we will have another visiting loco next summer. I hope that it might be her again as she fitted in so well with the line.

Sampled "Dinmore Manor" haulage last week during a superb sunny week in South Devon. Was surprised by the sheer number of tourists around.

Highlight was actually the river trip on the vessel "Cardiff Castle". The captain's commentary was most enjoyable and humorous!

As to the PDSR itself, I realise that it is not intended primarily as a "preserved" railway, it is a commercial undertaking that uses steam traction. It does not quite have the ambience of a preserved railway as such. ( colour-light signalling for instance)

The coaching stock looked somewhat time-worn on the outside, but was clean on the inside, ( I think our coach was possibly an ex-DMU trailer car?) and all the staff were friendly. I think the fares are expensive given the length of the run, but I suppose this reflects a railway run with presumably all or mostly paid staff rather than volunteers.

What was the rusty boiler/firebox unit on a flat wagon at Churston please? ( on the "turntable" side of the line).

    regards

It is a boiler/firebox for a 45XX loco. It has been around for years and was, for a long time, situated in the yard by the engineering works. It had to be moved for the new bus repair building. It was often used at one time for burning waste paper in. ;) It does not belong to 4555.

Yeah, been on the books for a while now. It will be based on the line once it's overhaul is complete by 2017 and will be a great addition to the fleet, it is quite unusual so hopefully it will draw some interest.

The main reason for getting the S160 is to help cover as 4277 will be withdrawn for overhaul at the end of next year also in the works at that time will be 5239 and 4555.

We will have a good range of locos over the next few years with the introduction of 75014 next year along with the S160 in 2017. 4555 also being introduced within the next few years after overhaul and not forgetting 7827 which will be running right through as well!

Is 75014 due to get the Swindon version of livery or resume as before?

That S160 news is tremendous. Very much looking forward to seeing that down here. More variety of (ideally spectacular and noisy) traction at Paignton is very welcome, the climbs and views make it such a superb route.

Im guessing this is the Pete Best connection? Never thought I'd see the day of an S160 arriving at Kingswear!
