DB orders SyltShuttle TRAXX locomotives

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has exercised an option with Bombardier for seven multi-engine TRAXX locomotives.

The diesel locomotives will operate the SyltShuttle service from Niebüll across the Hindenburgdamm to Sylt.

The TRAXX locomotives have four diesel engines, each with a performance of 563 kW. If the train is empty or running downhill then one or more of the engines can be switched off, saving fuel and reducing run time.

By the end of 2015, the first two locomotives will be in service. The €27 million order is an extension of a framework contract drawn up in 2011.

The new vehicles will replace the 218 locomotives which currently operate the shuttle service.
