A proposed 11km monorail line in Delhi could be open by 2017, according to the city’s Chief Minister Sheila Dixit.

The comment came during a conference discussing a new monorail and light rail partnership being forged between India and Japan.

In an announcement by the country’s official press service, the Minister of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, Kamal Nath, said there were now plans to work more closely with Japanese companies to develop India’s light rail network.

Nath said there is a need to fastrack the country’s light rail ambitions to ease congestion and pollution on India’s roads.

The Delhi monorail – India’s second behind the Mumbai system – will connect Shastri Park and Trilok Puri.
