Deutsche Bahn (DB) has begun a €30 million programme to refresh its high-speed ICE T series fleet.

The first of 31 seven-car and 11 five-car trains has arrived at DB’s Nuremberg depot where it will stay for around six to eight weeks for modernisation work.

The programme, which will be completed by the end of 2015, includes the installation of ETCS (European Train Control System) equipment, as well a new coat of paint, new carpets and new seat upholstery.

Each of the ICE T trains will also be equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots to improve internet access onboard, air conditioning units will be serviced and jumper cables replaced.

Chief executive of DB’s long-distance services Berthold Huber said: “With the modernization and equipping the vehicles with ETCS, we make the ICE T fit for their future use.”
