DfT pledge £18m to build four new stations

The government has announced an £18 million investment in Britain’s railway that will see four new stations build around the country.

Investment has been confirmed under the New Station Fund which will allow the construction of stations in Ilkeston, Derbyshire (£6.5m), Pye Corner, Newport (£3.5m), Lea Bridge, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest (£6.5m), and Newcourt, Devon (£1.44m).

The fund forms part of the £37 billion the government last year pledged to invest in rail infrastructure between 2014 and 2019.

In a series of press releases announcing each of the new stations, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “Funding this new station illustrates our commitment to working with community and national partners to meet local transport needs that not only deliver real benefits to passengers but also improves the network.

“This is another example of the government’s determination to transform the railways as we continue to push forward with the biggest programme of rail investment ever.”

All of the new stations are planning to open before the end of 2014.
