Firstly, I`m not a very technical person but trying to better my knowledge by reading (and translation!) much railway litterature.
As known there is a lot of different sort of wheels that has been used by steam locomotives and currently I was reading of H-sectioned spoked wheels. These distinctive construction equipped to some of the L.N.W.R engines (amongst others) made me speculating. Could one describe these sort of wheels as an old version or/and a precursor to the modern Boxpok -wheels?

I think that's a bit of a stretch. At an uneducated guess I imagine the idea was to bring the I girder principle to the spokes in the hope of saving weight.

The H spoked wheels were cast iron rather than steel. They were also mostly used on goods locos or other slow speed locos. They an economy measure. Basically cheap but robust for use on lower value locos.
