Train operators in Spain and Portugal have launched a new direct rail service between Vigo and Porto.

Officials from both countries announced a partnership in May to improve passenger and freight rail links across the border.

Spain’s Minister of Development Ana Pastor and Minister of Economy and Employment of Portugal Alvaro Santos Pereira travelled on the very first train yesterday (July 1).

A standard non-stop ticket between the two cities costs 14.75 euros.

The current journey time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, but Renfe and CP believe that infrastructure improvements and planned electrification works will cut that significantly.
