Discount fares for local people

Discussion in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' started by West Somerset Wizard, Feb 18, 2013.

Always been impressed by the West Somerset Railway's scheme which has run, in one shape or another, since the Railway reopened

and I believe many other heritage railways run similar schemes.

Shame mainline TOCs don't do this!

KWVR do the same. TOC's might not do this directly, but there are cheap fares in the West Midlands eg from Cov to Brum, (but not for us in N Warks to Brum). Likewise there are cheap fares in the West Yorks into Leeds, and I'm sure Manchester does something too. I guess these are all subsidised by the relevant local authorities. So pays to live in one of the large metropolitan areas if you want affordable rail travel.

Welshpool and Llanfair serves a very lightly populated area and annual membership enables unlimited travel for locals without crowding out full fare payers. The local population refer to membership as a "season ticket"!
