Happily both pilots OK - Skyraider pilot pulled off remarkable safe landing with 4 ft of wing missing.

Martin: Do you conclude that the P51 was fitted with an ejection seat? It does not look to be high enough for the pilot to manually exit the cockpit and deploy his 'shute.

P-51s are not fitted with ejection seats; it seems that the pilot just made a very quick descision and happily managed to deploy his parachute in time.

Thanks, I didn't think a WW2 single-seater would be capable of accommodating an ejection seat, even if there was a "lightweight" version for such aircraft. He must have been very near the minimum height for baling out. The image on one of the linked sites shows the chute not fully open, with him quite near the ground. Must have made it survivable though, thankfully.

Rob Davies had a very lucky escape from Big Beautiful Doll, especially so after bailing out at such low altitude. Also the Skyraider pilot as he managed to land with a chunk missing from his right wing tip. Hopefully the AAIB will be able to make recommendations to avoid future incidents like this, but we should be thankful that both pilots walked away.

    Regards,

    Dan
