East Coast main line investment announced

Network Rail has pledged an extra £15 million to improving the reliability of services on the East Coast main line.

The investment will be focussed on upgrading the southern end of the line and include increased tunnel maintenance and track renewals, and new measures to reduce overhead line incident risk, such as helicopter patrols, booster transformer modifications and the installation of pole-mounted cameras to carry out inspections.

The announcement follows increasing delays and disruption on the line over the last few months.

Phil Verster, Network Rail route managing director for LNE & EM, said: “Network Rail has presented plans to our customers that set out how we intend to reduce signal failures, overhead power supply problems and engineering work overruns that have affected services.

“Network Rail is committing a further £15m to support these programmes and we expect to see the benefits during the next six months.”
