EWS reveals the future of rail freight

EWS, Britain’s leading rail logistics company, is to create new divisions to meet the changing requirements of customers and to stimulate growth in rail freight.

The changes represent one of the most significant customer led innovations in rail freight in years

Four new divisions will be launched in the autumn to deliver an enhanced level of customer service, which will facilitate rail freight growth. Each division will have a clear focus to ensure there is a defined and recognisable link to customers and markets. The new divisions will be called:

EWS Energy – moving coal and other fuels for the energy sector

EWS Industrial – moving heavy industrial materials, such as metals and petroleum products, for British industry

EWS Construction – moving products for the construction and waste industries

EWS Network – services for Network Rail, the logistics sector and the rail industry

Keith Heller, EWS Chief Executive said: “This is an exciting chapter in the history of moving freight by rail in Britain. By creating EWS Energy, EWS Industrial, EWS Construction and EWS Network we will enable service delivery and market development to be even more closely aligned to our customers. This will result in focused expertise in each division providing the optimum transport solution for customers to move more by rail.”

Alongside enhanced service delivery and growth in rail freight will be a strong environmental message. Lowering damaging emissions and reducing road congestion is central to the Government’s long term thinking for transport and EWS recognises the concern of Government over climate change.

As a result, the four divisions will have a major environmental remit to help customers reduce the size of their carbon footprint and lower other damaging emissions by using EWS services. A freight train releases far fewer harmful emissions in the atmosphere than truck movements.

Mr Heller continued: “I do not want growth to come at the expense of the environment. Nobody can ignore climate change and that is why I am personally charging each division with a remit to work with customers to reduce the size of their carbon footprint and volumes of other damaging emissions. The new divisions are an exciting step forward in the development of EWS and are the future of rail freight.”

The four divisions will be formally launched later this year.
