Which was the first ex-Barry scrapyard loco to make it back on the main line? My guess would be either 6960 when it went to Shildon or possibly 841, but can someone provide a definitive answer please?

I could be pedantic and say that the ones that were towed by rail out of Barry were the first ones. Didcot did a few that way.
Following a return to steam I do not know. A Tysley loco maybe?

Don't think it was a Tyseley engine, Defiant did not steam until 1988, Rood Ashton some time after that, the other Barry aqusitions were Thonbury and Earl of Mount Edgecome
The first one 'in steam' might have been Lydham Manor- wasn't it moved to the P and D by rail in the early 70's following restoration?
First railtour not sure- link to first 70 locos that left barry, would probably have been one of these maybe 6960 or 5900?

Don't know about 'first' barry loco back on the main line but I imagine Leander was one of the earliest.

At Shildon in 1975, 6960 was joined by 841 and 5690 Leander. Leander was initially restored at BREL Derby during 1972/73. Where did it go from there and how did it get there? My guess is Leander was the first ex-Barry loco to run on the main line.

Was'nt Leander originally owned by a Stockport based company, and was based at Dinting, not sure how it got there or if it went by rail did it move under its own power or if it was towed

Are you confusing Leander with Bahamas?

I think both were at Dinting at one time. I seem to recall Leander being there in 1976. Also, Bahamas went straight into preservation.

Leander was originally owned by Oliver, Taylor & Crossley of Stockport, I think, and after restoration from Barry condition was based at Dinting for a while.

Leander was restored at BREL Derby Works in 1973 and was on show at the annual works open day in August that year. At the close of proceedings it left the works (Just after 5pm) under it's own steam and ran direct to Dinting Railway Centre.

This site says Derby Works in February 1973 had "a plentiful supply of steam locomotives with several Jinties, BR Standard 73129 and Jubilee 45690 'Leander' in various states of repair". It then goes on to say "45690 Leander was set for running-in trials in the last week of June". If true these would have been Leander's first main line runs in steam.

For the completists, 5690 made its running-turns, unusually (remember this was 1973) from Derby to Leicester and back (partially painted?). Apart from the fairly thorough Derby overhaul, the final paint job was generally considered to be the most accurate LMS rendition (with straw rather than yellow lining, as currently carried), certainly at the time, although.

The move to Dinting was memorable for me, as a 9-year old, in that I spent two hours sitting on Hathersage station, forlornly waiting for 5690 pass but having missed her by ten minutes. I have subsequently corrected that omission!

Thanks for all the replies, looks like Leander was first. So which was the first ex-Barry loco to haul a pasenger train on the mainline? Leander again?

5690's first rail tour, after restoration at Derby, was on 1 Sept 1973, when she hauled the Guide Bridge - Sheffield (and return) section of a tour to Hull; she was serviced at Grindleford, during the lay-over, as 5596 had been, on her first main line tour, the previous June.

As far as I recall, the reason for servicing in Grindleford goods yard was --allegedly anyway--that the "Eastern Region" ie Sheffield, were less enthusiastic about steam than were the "London Midland" Region of BR.
Somewhere I have some colour negs, never printed, of Leander at Grindleford, with the Autumn colours of Padley Woods on the hillside in the background. One day I must get round to printing them.

An attractive colour portrait of 5690, at Grindleford, taken by John Hillier, was used as the centrespead of the next edition of the Dinting Railway Centre guide, which he compiled.

What was the next ex-Barry onto the main line after that? I think it could have been 30841, although its main line career was rather short.

Lovely picture. Can't help noticing the average age of the crowd is a lot less than you'd expect to find these days
