The operators of Norway’s Bergen tram system have exercised an option from an earlier contract with manufacturer Stadler for eight additional light rail vehicles.

As well as the additional Variobahn trams, Stadler will extend the current fleet from five to seven cars and continue to maintain the vehicles until 2026.

The agreement, which is worth over 100 million euros, includes ‘preventive and corrective’ maintenance services.

The new trams will operate on Phase 3 of the line, which will connect the city with Bergen Airport.

Michael Daum, director of Stadler Pankow, said: “Only recently, the customer praised us publicly for the availability of our fleet, which is in excess of 99 per cent.

“For us, this is an indicator of the excellent quality of our vehicles and the commitment of our maintenance team, which has now been on site since 2009.

“We set up the tram depot and established the maintenance site in conjunction with our contract partners.”
