    THERE is an old joke in which a country yokel, when asked by a lost motorist how to get to a certain destination, replies: "Well, I wouldn't start from here."

    Exactly the same advice could be given today to rail passengers seeking to travel to London. Under no circumstances should they set out from Inverness. Following the opening by the Queen this week of a modernised St Pancras Station, and with it the final leg of the fast channel tunnel rail link, it is now quicker to reach London by train from Marseille on the Mediterranean coast, or from Zurich in Switzerland, than from the Highland Capital. What an indictment this is of the lack of investment in rail infrastructure in Britain in general and north of the Highland line in particular.
