leander departed lancaster 08.10, never saw it but heard it whistle as it arrived, got on me bike and heard it go up the bank seemingly with ease, so assume had deisel on the back, had just stopped raining.

5690 seen at Chorley, running a few minutes late but was giving off plenty of clag.

Did you manage to stay dry today, Austin? I like the shot at Wilpshire, with the train "bending" over the summit.

My clip is also now online, I only did a shot at the north side of Horton this morning, 5690 looked and sounded fantastic as usual.
Now go capture the SSE... Spoilt for choice up here in the north these days ;)

It was ok Mark until the last shot at Helwith Bridge when fine heavy drizzle was blowing straight into the lens. I left the shot in the video as the three cylinder beat was magical !!

Excellent coverage everyone - thanks for sharing :).

I dashed out this evening after seeing Austin's video, feeling suitably inspired. Nowt special, but oh what a sound when the driver opens the regulator properly!

Thanks very much Ralph, I'm just pleased to have been able to 'inspire' David to get the camera out again. I agree with you, he's certainly been missed.

Leander launches "The Fellsman" 29 July 2009

New tour company Statesman Rail ran its first steam tour yesterday, “The Fellsman” from Lancaster to Preston and Blackburn, then over the Settle - Carlisle. LMS Jubilee 4-6-0 No 5690 Leander reached 73 mph on the straight and level main line to Preston, then turned east to pick up passengers at Bamber Bridge, Blackburn, Clitheroe and Long Preston. The loco got away sharply from its final pickup, reaching 55 mph by Settle Junction. The 1 in 100 and the damp rail in the mist and drizzle took their toll and we dropped to 26 at Taitlands, recovered to 40 after Helwith Bridge and reached Ribblehead without dropping below 30 again. Leander ran freely down from Ais Gill, having to brake frequently to keep its speed within the limit.

Contary to the weather forecast, the mist and rain cleared for the return run. Leander performed well again on the southward climb from Appleby, accelerating to 38 past Outhgill and reaching Ais Gill Summit at 32 mph. Its final challenge was the steep climb from Whalley Viaduct to Wilpshire, where it slogged away steadily in the high 20s with its ten coach load – not at all bad for a Class 6 engine with a ten coach load.

A successful start, then, for this new company with an excellent loco, ten clean crimson Mark 1s, a full load of passengers and the best printed tour guide I can recall. Best of all, most of the punters were friends and families out for the day, with very few of the ‘usual suspects’ in evidence. If new business continues to be attracted in this way, it will certainly boost the future of main line steam.
