Alstom has released renderings which show how the new trains it is building for Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Metro might look.

Contracts totalling $22.5 billion were awarded yesterday (July 30) for the design and construction of the new automated system’s six lines and 87 stations.

The FAST consortium, of which Alstom is a member, won a $7.8 billion contract, covering three of the lines.

Alstom’s share is around $1.7 billion and will see the French rolling stock manufacturer deliver 69 Metropolis trains, signalling and energy recovery systems, and its fast track laying technology, Appitrack.

Announcing its involvement, Alstom described the Riyadh Metro as ‘one of the largest turnkey metro projects ever launched in the world’.

Once completed in 2018, the new network will cover 170 kilometres.

Henri Poupart-Lafarge, president of Alstom Transport, said: “We are honored to have been selected by the city of Riyadh to support this major project, which will allow thousands of people to travel every day in clean, comfortable and safe conditions.

“Alstom remains dedicated to supporting upcoming projects to answer to the increasing demand for urban mobility in the country.”
