More than 4,000 people gathered at Wrocław Central station to catch a glimpse of Poland’s first new EIC Premium Pendolino train.

The new trains, which will begin revenue service in 2014, have a maximum operating speed of 250 km/h and will reduce the journey time between Warsaw and Krakow by an hour.

PKP Intercity, which has ordered 20 trains from manufacturer Alstom, held a welcoming ceremony on platform 3 of Wrocław Central, with government officials and PKP Group executives all in attendance.

The first train, which is made up of two carriages and the drivers cab, has travelled 1,500 km from Italy and arrived on August 13 to begin testing in Żmigród near Wrocław.

To date, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has pumped more than 340 million euros in loan payments into the acquisition of new rolling stock for Poland’s rail network.

The Pendolino will next be on show at the international rail exhibition TRAKO in Gdansk between September 24-27.
