    Does anyone know why the 2859 "norwich city" and the city of london I think were steamlined? and why these two?
    And where their new name plates went?

    "In September 1937, Nos. 2859 & 2870 were given A4-style steamlining for working the "East Anglian" service from Liverpool Street to Norwich. These B17s would be given the classification B17/5. This streamlining was for show only, and served no practical purpose at typical B17 speeds. Also, the streamlining actually fitted over the existing boiler cloth plates, so avoiding damage to the lagging around the barrel. The streamlined appearance was enhanced by fitting side sheets to the tenders. Also, as with the A4s, chime whistles were fitted. Both the valences and chime whistles were removed during World War 2, and the streamline cladding itself was removed in April 1951."

    AFAIK the whole train was streamlined and the locos were done to match the train.
    I also believe some of the stock is preserved.

    Those two B17s were chosen because the East Anglian ran between London and Norwich. 2870 had a London football club name and 2859 was Norwich City, which was later given to 2839.

    Yes I am an active volunteer
    The train wasn't streamlined, it was conventional teak bodied externally, although the interior had similarities to the later streamlined trains. None of the coaches was preserved.

    It looks like the LNER was up to a marketing stunt. The streamlining may have served no practical purpose, but in branding terms, it linked this service with the prestige East Coast trains. The LNER were pretty switched on image wise.

    Am I right in thinking that the other one is in a trophie cabnet?
    the east angila name plates are porbably melt down?

    If I remember correctly from Joint Line there was some talk of converting one of the M&GN JRS Gresley Coaches,with a stripped out interior (think it was the TK) to an East Anglian First Open as they have some of the original seats and there is a comprehensive set of photos at the NRM showing the interior with the distinctive marquetry etc. This was some time ago mind

    There are other coaches in the queue before this would/might happen (and bear in mind plans may have changed, I'm only going on what I remember from Joint Line). It would be great though. In terms of the next coach there is an announcement about a predecessor (in the queue and on the premium GE Main Line London to Norfolk service) GER BTK295, on the news page http://www.mandgn.co.uk/members_news.htm

    I love the idea that maybe in 2014 ish we'll be able to ride in BTK295 behind the B12 (albeit LNER built) and in perhaps 2025 we'll be able to ride in a replica East Anglian FO behind a replica Sandringham (albeit not streamlined). Now, for all my dreams to come true I need to win the lottery and rebuild M&GN 50 and a replica Claude Hamilton for mainline running (perfect for a Holt to Dereham service).

    For NNR to restore the 'mainline' LNER teak set is going to cost a hell amount if i remember from a joint last year (?) so i dont suspect they will be started on anytime soon although i could be wrong and i think one or two carriage and wagon peeps do want to start on them but not sure...
    LNER TK - 3395 (currently the childrens coach at sheringham station) has recently had bodywork repairs etc and is now sporting a smart looking BR unlined maroon livery

    Just following on from the comments earleir in this thread by 61624: The six-coach "East Anglian" set was teak finish externally, and did not have the streamlined valances and rubber coach connections of the "Coronation" and "West Riding Limited" sets. The "East Anglian" formation had two kitchen cars, and open stock throughout, the third class furnishing being very similar to that used on the streamline trains, however the first class cars seated three passengers abreast, rather than the swivelling armchairs in alcoves as provided on the two streamlined trains mentioned above. Still extremely comfortable, but slightly less lavish than on the "Coronation" and "West Riding Limited".

    The chime whistle off the "streamlined B17"s still exists and is currently fitted to a friends Aveling roller (his father who was an old Stratford driver acquired it).

    I wont say where it is now but it can still be heard in East Anglia!

    I will speak to my mate and see if I can get a pciture of it, I will also see if he can bring the whistle at least to Whitwells steam day but he may well be booked elsewhere with the Aveling.

    (Incidentally my own steamer sentinel S4 is fitted with ex B1 whistle 61006 "Blackbuck" and also regularly whistles at the GE mainline!)
