A freight train transporting oil and diesel has derailed and caught fire in East Ayrshire, police have said.

An exclusion zone has been set up around the scene, about half a mile south of Stewarton.

Strathclyde Police said six of the 10 wagons had come off the rails at about 0615 GMT. No-one is reported injured.

At least one wagon caught fire in the crash. It is understood the train hit a pylon while crossing a bridge. The nearby A735 has been closed.

John Dicks, who lives about a mile away from the rail line, said: "The fire is raging. There are flames 50ft in the air.

"There is pitch black smoke blowing over the town."
