While we were putting together our latest exhibition with the Landscape Photographer of the Year awards, I took the opportunity to look at how some of the photographs in our collection had captured similar compositions.

Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle & Carlisle Railway is an iconic railway structure. Here, Eric Treacy captures a goods train on the viaduct.

I love the way the trees frame this image of the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick upon Tweed, with an A4 crossing the border.

Many of the images in our collection were taken by railway companies, who had unrestricted access to the lineside. This image of British Railway’s Ivanhoe crossing the Forth Bridge, reminds me of this year’s winning image by David Cation.

The incline at Shap is another favourite amongst photographers. I like this image as it shows both a Class 40 and steam locomotive tackling the climb.

The Shap scene is a bit more interesting than you realise. If you look carefully there are actually 2 trains which consists of a train with failed class 40 diesel locomotive being banked by a 2-6-4 tank locomotive AND this train is being banked by a 2nd train hauled by a Class 40 locomotive on a shorter train.

This photo was published in the October 1964 edition of Modern Railways and was entitled 'Calvacade climbs Shap'. The caption reads..........

On July 25 English Electric Type 4 diesel No. D340 failed at Scout Green on the Birmingham-Edinburgh express. As the train's banker, a Class 4 2-6-4T, was unable to move the train and diesel further, the following Euston-Perth train, headed by English Elecrtic Type 4 No. D316, was buffered up behind to help push the failure and it's train over Shap summit.

Ta muchly for the info - it should help the NRM librarian add interest to the text as well as increase her "keyword" choices.
