I thought i’d Pass this on in case anyone is interested or knows someone who is interested. It isn’t like fully funded PhDs come round every day.

2.1 and an related MA plus why you want the gig.

There were quite a few different types of railway that worked into Dartmoor from the edge of it. They were industrial in nature. All in all a fascinating project; I hope the successful applicant will get immense satisfaction from his findings on the Moor and I, for one, if I am still around, look forward to any thesis that is published.
On the jocular side of things I hope he is made aware of the slithering occupants on part of the former Princetown line and the other small folk who can cause havoc and 'pixylate' strangers. :D

It looks a really interesting project. I hope it will have a lot of strong applicants. In someways, looking at the scope of the project it is almost a career as it seems to cover almost 200 years, 130 years of the railway and 70 years of the afterlife of the railway. I am sure there will be a lot about the prison in the archives (so it has a nice intersection with the criminal justice history, alongside the socio-economic history as well. And it looks like they want you to spend plenty of time on the ground as well. So lots of directions for the student to take the research.

For those who enjoy a good read either on the beach, riverside or back garden thee are a couple of good books on Dartmoor railways.
The fist is The Princetown Branch by Anthony Kingdom and the other is Walking Dartmoor Railways by Eric Hemery. Both are available fro the A>Z place but maybe your favourite heritage line has or could get it for you.
