Furness railway 040

many years ago in the early 1970 I can remember two furness railway 040 tank engines being on static display in Barrow in Furness , one being at the George Hsatwell school , which later went to the lakeside and haverthwaite railway , and another on display at a caravan site on walney island , does any one know what happened to this on and does it still exist ?

 

Purchased for restoration by Mr 45231,previously painted as Percy by the old entrance at Steamtown.

having spoke to a collegue today he tells me there may have been a third engine ? which was on static display at a school in ulverstone , this i beleve disappeared many years ago , the one at steamtown has any one seen it recently what state is it in ?

 

There was only two locos, FR20 went to the school @ Barrow and FR25 was from a school at Ulverston which is now the one @ Carnforth. Neither of these went to a caravan site @Walney after leaving the schools both first went to Carnforth . . . . FR25 is the one with the smaller than original wheels (4' ish), although those carried by FR20 (4'7") are not the originals either and are believed to be from the 1950's ish.

 

thanks for that so do you have any ideal what was the loco that went to westshore caravan park on static display ? i can remember in the early to mids 70s it being there as my parents were the caretakers for the changing rooms at the football ground next door and when the were working there i would play on it , i know it was an 040 saddletank and it wasnt on display for very long as the sea air quickly took its toll , just would like to know if it still exists , i did have pictures of me as a child playing on it but at this moment can not place them ???

 

AB 929 of 1902, a 0-4-0ST, from Millom Hematite Ore & Iron Co Ltd, Millom Ironworks, Cumberland was briefly "preserved" at by R. G. Merchant, at the Earnse Bay Caravan Site, Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire from 2/2/1973 to 22/6/1973. The "Industrial Railway Society" reported that planning permission was refused and that the locomotive was moved to Steamtown, Carthforth.

This locomotive later went to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and is now preserved at the "Old Station House", Shortwood, in Gloucestershire.
