Future covered workshop and storage space (especially for carriages) ?

What plans do railways have for new covered storage/workshop space ? What issues are they facing ? I am interested in future plans rather than what's been built already.
How do you allocate the space available, ie what is allowed/not allowed to go under cover ?

 

Somewhere to build a large shed, and potentially the earthworks needed to prepare it are usually the problem, the shed itself can be a relatively cheap portal frame building, but fire precautions such as sprinklers are potentially expensive.

A new 40-carriage shed at Pickering is part of the NYMR's recently approved HLF award. It is planned to have 4 7-8 coach roads, 1 for the Pullman dining train (with associated land-based kitchen, stores etc.) 2 x Mk 1 sets and the teak train. One road will have a full length pit for maintenance purposes. Unfortunately, no space for as yet unrestored coaches, which are arguably the ones most in need of protection, and nothing at Grosmont for the set based there. Longer term I can see a 2-road shed over the current Grosmont carriage sidings, freeing up space at Pickering for more teak coaches as they are restored, reducing the need for covered accommodation for vehicles awaiting restoration.

 

Looking at a new building to house the railways collection of wagons undercover. The main issue facing the project is the fact the railway is a scheduled ancient monument, so a lot of planning hoops.

 

At Havenstreet the long term plan is for a totally new Loco Works in Griffins field, an extension to Train Story. The old loco works will be turned over to the C&W and Diesel Loco Departments, lots of winners!

 

Some good answers keep them coming, it would be nice too if people gave the rough size of what is planned, ( ie how many roads, how many say Mark 1 coaches could you get in it)

An extra 2 roads in Train Story approx 260ft per road, in addition to the new Loco Works a new running shed is distinctly possible.

 

So your not planning to rebuild Ryde loco depot then is it true there a dismantaled 02 buried in the disposal pit then

 

I'm slightly confused by you saying 40 carriages with space for 4x 7/8 sets (max 32). Surely it is either or, and if it is 40 carriages there will be some room somewhere for additional unrestored vehicles?

 

AIUI There will become additional space for "loose" vehicles, possibly two per road, (e.g. GW, GN saloons) but I agree that the numbers don't add up. That's what the PR issued by the NYMR says, though. Maybe they will be able to fit in an extra shorter road or two - I haven't seen the latest plans. Any additional space would be good as there are a number of vintage coaches (e.g. NER 945, ECJS 189, H&BR 40) coming along well that would not sit comfortably in existing sets. In particular 945 and 189 are likely to form the basis of a vintage dining train, which would need a shed road of its own.

 

Sorry if this sounds like a daft question, but from the planning point of view, are applications treated akin to industrial buildings or more the way agricultural buildings are assessed, or does a specific planning category apply to railway buildings?

 

Been saying for years rolling stock are valuable heritage artefacts in their own right. Left out unprotected pretty much everywhere still..

Middleton is only a small railway but they can get all but one loco of the 24 locos under cover, although with a new arrival next week this will become two. Plans are being worked up for a carriage shed after which it will only be the wagons and cranes that have to sit outside. It is a lack of land that prevents any further covered accommodation being planned.

 

It seems there is probably no clear cut answer, I think it depends on a number of things such as

1 Does the railway have a transport and works order ? (as this gives extra powers)
2 Is the railway say in a national park as there may be extra restrictions
3 Is it an extension to an existing building as this is probably easier to get then a totally new one.
4 The type of building

I know for example the Glouc Warwicks built an extension to their goods shed Winchcombe and left it open at the ends, no doors and open at the bottom then it could be classified as a 'dutch barn'. Of course the doors etc got added some years later.

 

The Festiniog Railway has built a shed to contain around 200 original wagons both restored and unrestored. The last two roads were connected over the bank holiday weekend.

The track inside the shed has also been laid using a mixture of pway materials reclaimed from the mainline over the years. This includes doublehead, bullhead, and tramway rail sections all used on the Festiniog at some point.

A new carriage shed is to be built on the foreshore at Boston lodge to replace the existing one and house the main running fleet.

A 3 road heratige carriage shed has been constructed recently and this will be used as a temporary running shed while a new loco shed is built on the site of the existing one at Boston lodge.

There are then plans to rebuild the "new erecting shop" at Boston Lodge to make better use of the space available.

Finally a new loco running shed is proposed for Dinas.

What happened to the Swanage railway carriage shed at Herston? Space was cleared for it, but nothing happened since.

 

PD rights mainly apply to operational land for those with a TWO/LRO and in the case of a carriage shed would likely be permitted if it could be accommodated within the footprint of a "railway station". Note that the meaning of station in this context is wider than a platform alone and could include "ye olde goods yard" for example if it has historically been recognised as part of the station footprint.

In all other cases PP would be required.

What doors!? It's not known as "Siberia" in the winter for nothing! It's still open ended although not open bottomed any more. There was some murmurs of installing some roller shutters not too long ago though, might warm it up a little bit!

We are looking at getting a carriage shed on the railway some time soon, nothing definite yet but I'm confident that in 5-10 years time there'll definitely be something to house the running rakes. In the meantime the paintshop makes it a lot easier to give coaches a quick go over to keep them running for longer.

 

Oh I didn't realize they hadn't been done yet as I don't work there any more. It was built mainly to cover the carriage jacks as they had been refurbished and I think the insurance company insisted they were kept undercover. The GWR is in an ideal situation as they have a huge piece of land at Winchcombe which would be ideal for an enormous carriage shed. It is just a shame that they haven't built one. Most railways struggle because they need to purchase additional land and that is neither easy or cheap. Sometimes you can get farmers alongside the railway who are supportive, some not, so even if land can be acquired it may not be in the ideal place and they want 3 times the price etc. Ideally the GWR should build something like the Severn Valleys shed at Kidderminster although probably shorter and they would be probably in a good position to get lottery funding etc.

 

Spot on! However extension projects seem to get prioritised in most places over carriage sheds.
