    Hello all together,

I've read a lot about the problem, to get track material for heritage railway extensions. Especially railway switches are quite difficult to get.

Firstly, I want to know, what happens next with the Long Marston MOD railway Depot. Wikipedia says, that the largest part of the Depot will be used for housing and a smaller part will be used for storage sidings for Vivarail.
Is that true? Are there aney plans in the Internet yet?

Secondly, are there any locomotives and coaches still located there?

And my last question is, if Long Marston Depot will be largely redevoloped, then they have to get rid of all the old remains of the railway tracks. Wouldn't it be good for heritage railway groups to refill the storage of rails and switches? Is it possible to get the permission to recycle the rails from the MOD (realisticly)?

    Thank you for your answers

    Yours,
    FredBert

Is ex MOD Trackwork of a decent enough quality to be reused?

From visits to a couple of MOD depots over the years, I would guess the track would be OK for use in sidings. Any points would be short radius ones and probably with no provision for fitting facing point locks, point rodding or point motors.

    Cheers, Neil

I've never been to Long Marston but a lot of (most?) M.O.D. track was 75lb/yd flat bottom on concrete sleepers so, as Neil says, not a lot of use for main running lines.
